Homemade Garam Masala

Rose Lemere
This homemade garam masala recipe is easy to make, and it uses basic spices you likely have on your spice rack. Grama masala is a ground spice mix used in many popular Indian recipes and Indian curries. This recipe does justice to the authentic Indian spice, all while being easy to make and simple to follow.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • In a small bowl combine all the ingredients and mix well.
  • Transfer the mixture to an air-tight container, such as a small mason jar, an empty recycled spice jar or bottle, new spice bottles, or even a sandwich bag.
  • Use as you would any other spice blend. *Store your homemade garam masala in a dry, cool, dark place.

Notes

*Homemade garam masala much like other spices and seasoning doesn’t really go bad or have an expiration date. The general rule of thumb for spices and seasoning blends is six months, though they are usually safe to eat well beyond that fact. But they will begin to grow stale and their flavors will start dull, leaving you with a far less flavorful spice blend, and less flavorful dishes.

This batch might not seem like it makes a lot, and you are defiantly double or triple it. Considering that most recipes only call for 1-2 tsp of grama masala, this recipe makes more than enough. As a matter of fact, if you don’t cook Indian food more than twice a month I would recommend even cutting this recipe in half, to avoid waste.
