Ingredients

  • Apples of choice(you'll need anywhere from 6-12 depending on the size of your apples) In my opinion, the very best apple to use is McIntosh. But you can also use granny smith apples, pink lady apples, or any type of apple you prefer.
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats Both quick-cooking and old-fashioned oats work well
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour You can also sub whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup cold butter
  • 2 tbsp white sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a small bowl combine the oats, flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cut in the cold butter, then using your hands or fork mix the butter in, until it resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  • Peel and thinly slice the apples. Layer the apple slices in a cake pan. I like to use a glass 9x13 cake pan, but any rectangle or square pan with still work.
  • Layer the apples on top of each other in the pan, until they are roughly 1/4 inch from the rim of the pan.
  • Sprinkle the white sugar evenly over the top of the apples.
  • Sprinkle the prepared topping over the apples, making sure to cover the whole surface area. Try to keep the topping as even as possible.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  • Remove the crisp from the oven and allow it to cool for 3-5 minutes before serving. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, a drizzle of maple syrup, or on its own.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Any leftover crisp can be covered with plastic wrap or moved to an airtight container, and stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.

You can use soft butter in this recipe if needed, the topping will still turn out just fine, but it would be quite as crumbly. But don't use melted butter for making a crumble topping, the topping will still taste good, but it won't hold its shape or get crisp!

If you are worried about your apples turning brown, you can squeeze a little lemon juice over the apple spices before adding the sugar.

To make this recipe recipe a little healthier, try using almond flour in place of the all-purpose flour. And Coconut sugar in place of the brown and white sugar.
